Chapter 6

Cristo held onto the banister of the boat as it cut through the waves, sea foam splashing into his face and making his braided beard damp. On the mast, Gale swung freely from a rope, uncaring of the chopping motion of the ocean. Gale might not remember his year-long bender, but his body did. Cristo cursed the elven bastard and how freely and unperturbed he moved across the boat.

Levi strode up to Cristo, slightly unsure of his footing. “Do you need a blessing.”

“Fuck yes!”

The priest muttered a prayer, and warm healing light washed away the nausea rolling in Cristo’s stomach. His feet felt more certain on the sea-sprayed boards which titled and swayed with each tip of the temperamental ocean.

“The god of divine light Heliog has blessed you and washed away the illness,” Levi said serenely. “Let me know if you are affected again, and I shall pray for you to be healed again.”

“Cheers,” Cristo muttered. “But don’t forget to save your spells for the actual fight that is coming up.”

“We have time before we arrive in the port. I will have time to pray and replenish my connection to the Lord of Light before then.”

Cristo grunted. He did not agree with the thought. When on the job, a rest was never guaranteed, but he knew better than to try to argue with a religious fanatic. Hell, it was hard enough to kill one.

“So, how did you figure out they went this way?” Levi asked.

“Those documents you got me had some clear receipt of material, that plus their trade routes.” Cristo shrugged. “This little island was the only thing that made sense. As long as the documents are real.”

He was silent for a moment. The priest’s eyes searched the horizon, a deep and pained look was etched into his young face. “We don’t like to advertise it, but the churches keep a close network of information…”

“Oh,” Cristo scratched his beard and joined Levi’s contemplation of where the ocean met the sky. “Is that supposed to be a secret?”

“What?” Levi started and looked down at the dwarf.

“Is the church havin’ spies supposed to be a secret?” Cristo clarified. “Just sayin’ most in my line of business know about that. It’s pretty obvious. Like how the captain of this boat is a devotee of your church. Just another resource you lot have access to. I was more wondering how you documents.”

“What do you mean it is obvious?” Levi asked incredulously. “The agents of our church work secretly from the shadows, gathering delicate information from the whispers of our congregation so we can best serve and protect the people.”

Swinging from the ropes overhead, Gale called out, “You people actually thought you were being secretive? Yeesh.”

A few nearby sailors chuckled as they went about their work.

“Yeah, most just know the church keeps a stockpile of info on most people,” Cristo countered. “I mean, confessin’ your sins seems like a pretty fuckin’ weird idea for absolution. Why do you need to do it to a priest to count? Just seems like a priest wants the gossip… No offence.
